Several months after Brad and I were married, we disconnected our cable. I really don’t remember the thinking there. It was probably summer, our usual shows would have ended - until the fall, and we were looking to save 40? bucks. It only lasted for a month. We hooked it back up, and soon after discovered The X-files.
Anyway, summer’s here and nothing’s on, so why are we paying for cable? I told the kids today. No more regular television. Savannah was disappointed. We do, however, still subscribe to Netflix. The kiddies also take advantage of our public library’s dvd collection, which is free! And I’ve told them they can pick out more than two next time. There are a few shows we will still download, but the cost beats paying for cable. In fact, I realized today that we’ve really just been paying to graze.
I feel really good about this. It forces us to take time for other things. Everything on my bookcase that’s lying horizontally is on my reading list. I also have a lot of writing to do. Then there’s the kids’ tv. I don’t feel good when they get too much television. I grew up in front of the telelvision. I still find comfort there. Now they won’t be tempted to turn it on so much, and I won’t be tempted to let them.
